I farm 350 acres at Windmill Park, on the coast of St. Bride’s Bay in Haverfordwest. It’s a mixed farm: I grow early potatoes for Puffin, spring barley for seed production and beef cattle to use the grass in rotation. In the winter months, 500 sheep graze the land here.
Potatoes have been farmed here since 1948, though I haven’t been there the whole time but I have seen plenty of changes in planting and production.
I’m one of the original members of Puffin Produce, so we go back to 1981 together. I was also their first chairman when they evolved from a co-operative, and it’s been a great journey to grow to where we are today.
I’m keen to promote the family farm in a time when ‘big farming’ is taking over. For me, mixed farming is the way, using sound farming practices to protect the land we’ve inherited from previous generations.
