Discover Growseed

Founded by Gerry Murphy in 2014, Growseed has slowly developed into a known brand name within the seed industry. Starting off in 2010 with a view to provide fresh food for the family, Gerry quickly managed to provide for his growing family by becoming self-sufficient in all vegetables grown and a range of soft fruit.

Learning to grow, store, can and preserve a range of products certainly became an experiment along the way. Including growing hops and wheat for home-made beer and cider!

Ever frustrated with the constant introduction of new vegetables seeds. It felt as if a new range was introduced every season! Little was being done to adapt the current range or change planting and growing habits based on recent climate changes – many of the growing instructions today have not changed since that seed variety was first introduced in the UK! In some cases, nearly a 100 years ago!

Gerry quickly discovered there was little information to be found in the UK or on traditional allotment sites. So, turning to Canada and Northern America for inspiration, where growing seasons are very limited, Gerry decided to apply the same principles here to extend the growing season or getting an early start.

Experimenting with lost technology such as heat beds or using more modern geothermal methods, Gerry began to experiment with the range of seed that was on offer in the UK and foundation of Growseed began.

The method

Taking a variety of seeds Gerry’s core focus has and always has been to find a variety of seed that meets our strict criterial that is still in use today.

Germination – Does the seed have a high germination rate.?

Crop Yield – Does the plant produce a good or large crop for time of growth?

Taste – Does the fruit or vegetable have a great taste?

Once Gerry found a range of seed that met all three of his requirements, he stuck with it and only used that crop to grow that specific range. Later experiments involved throwing the rule book out the window and focused on multi sowings, starting or extending a fruit or vegetable by one month or in some cases establishing a crop all year.

Expanding & Experimenting

As we look to the future Growseed is slowly extending its product range. Starting off with just 24 different packet of seeds this has now grown to over 314 varieties with many more in trials.

We have also started to expand our product range to include flowers, an often-requested item, as well as Pots & Trays.

 Modern Tips & Advice

2021 has been the year our Growseed companion app has launched. It’s ready to download, however it’s still in the very early stages. As time allows, we will update the app with more detailed and specific growing methods and advice.

For now, if you get stuck or have a question in regard to growing, extending the growing season, using grow lights or more then please feel free to drop us a message.
